Designing library spaces for new generation of users without library budget
Abstract
From 2004 to 2012 Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) Library has collaborated with institutions and companies to
design library spaces for students of millennial Generation. Five corners or library sections have been developed as spacious and comfortable areas to accommodate reading areas and other services as well as library users’activities without spending much budget from the library. The corners are named as American Corner, World Bank Corner, Nation Building Corner, Sampoerna Corner, and Hatta Corner. American Corner is a collaborative partnership with the US Embassy to provide space for reading area, multimedia viewing facilities, and programs and activities. World Bank Corner is a partnership with the World Bank Jakarta that provides space for reading area, discussion room, and discussion on economic development. Nation Building Corner is a partnership with the Power Plant industry to provide reading area in Indonesian style with reading materials and documentary films. Sampoerna Corner is the contribution of Sampoerna Company to provide reading area with reading materials, online access to databases and internet access as well as movie viewing. This was done through Sampoerna’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) program. Hatta Corner is built to keep archives and rare collection belonging to the first vice president of Indonesia, Mohammad Hatta. This corner was a collaborative project between UGM Library and Meutia Hatta, the daughter of the first vice president of Indonesia and former minister of social welfare. Besides providing reading spaces that are relevant for millennial generation for free, most partners also support various library activities such as literacy instruction, presentations, outreach programs, and staff training. By opening such corners, UGM library does not spend budget for library interior. One third of the library space has been developed as comfortable areas for library users without library’s budget.
