Some effects of microbial activity on the evolution of clay-based buffer properties in underground repositories
Abstract.
In this study, the role of microbial activities on the properties and characteristics of the buffer material is examined. Since little direct experimental evidence relating to clay–microbe interaction in the nuclear waste repository buffer exists, extrapolation of information related to microbiological weathering and dissolution of clay minerals to the repository environment is made. Biologically-mediated mineral transformations are discussed, in addition to their potential effect on buffer performance and the potential impact on predictions for safety assessment for underground repositories.
