Building Community Resilience to Support Orphans, Separated Children, and Youth in Aceh
Child protection in general and psyehosocial support activities in particular for orphans, separated children, and youth (OSCY) in Aceh had started long before the area was hit by the double catastrophes: the earthquake and the giant waves of tsunami that took place on December 26. 2004. Organizations such as UNICEF and Save the Children have been operating in the area since 1976 to help reduce the trauma experienced by thousands of dnldren as a result of armed confrontations between the Indonesian armed forces and the Aceh separatist movement. The inßux of hundreds of helping organizations along with voluntary social workers immediately after the tsunami was realized because the magnitude of destruction had made their presence highly needed.
Despite the fact that helping organizations have conducted an all-out effort to provide their services, a ¡ot of work still has to be done to help return the tsunami survivors back to normal life. A community based approach should always be considered in designing all programs intended to support the livelihood of the OSCY and their caregivers. Community youth centers are recommended to provide continued psyehosocial support for OSCY. Many future programs for OSCY can be implemented in the centers, such as to provide knowledge on life transition from, piay to work, to instill religious and
social norms as important sources of social capital, and to boost their spirit of life and self-confidence. These are all preparations for the OSCY that would lead them to become fully responsible adults.
