Ornamental Pest Control
Ornamental plants and turf are grown for their aesthetic value. Because of that, these plants are more valuable to one person than to another. The various pests of ornamental plants may cause considerable damage when they occur in high enough populations. These pests include disease agents, weeds, insects, mites, and vertebrate animals.
Other plant problems may include such things as improper fertility, pesticide injury, improper planting and pruning, root problems, soil problems, mechanical damage, pollution damage, and natural decline due to age. Before effecting a control measure, the problem must be diagnosed. Consider all of the above factors unless a
causal agent is readily apparent.
Study the plant site and inquire as to history of plant or site before making a final diagnosis. In most cases you would be well advised to do nothing if you aren’t sure of a problem. This is especially true where chemicals are involved since an improper chemical application may be more harmful than the actual damage being done by the causal agent. The following information is intended to provide more information regarding the various pests and pest problems which you may encounter. This information also will be used to formulate tests for certification and recertification purposes.
Specific mention of chemicals are to be used as a guide only as changes are continuously occurring and updates on pesticide recommendations is an annual process.
