Turf Pest Control: PESTICIDE APPLICATION TRAINING
The turfgrass industry in Kansas includes home lawns, institutional and industrial grounds, sod production,
golf courses, athletic fields and other recreational turf, parks, roadsides, airports and cemeteries. Home
lawns comprise by far the greatest amount of turfgrass acreage. Turfgrass is maintained for beautification,
recreation, erosion control and general utility purposes. In general, people appreciate and take pride in maintaining attractive and quality turf.
Turf must have proper care and management and timely pest control to be attractive, have good color and density and be free of weeds, insects and disease. Turfgrass management includes selecting the right grass,
mowing, watering, fertilizing and thatch control. These are the most important factors in maintaining good turf and preventing problems. Pesticides should be used as an aid in turf management but not as a substitute
for good cultural practices.
Do not use pesticides to offset the effects from improper watering, fertilizing practices, mowing height and
frequency, thatch accumulation, poor soil or improper turfgrass species. The following factors affect turfgrass growth: climate, soil, management, pest control and selecting adapted species and cultivars.
