Thermoresponsive Shape-Memory Photonic Nanostructures
Technological applications increasingly demand materials with sophisticated features and improved functionalities. In this context, multifunctional materials (MFMs) are especially attractive as they are often capable of responding to different physical, chemical and/or biological stimuli. A particularly useful property that has been incorporated into MFMs is the shapememory effect (SME), which was fi rst identifi ed in a goldcadmium alloy [ 1 ] and posteriorly discovered in polymers (the so-called shape-memory polymers, SMPs). [ 2,3 ] SMPs are able to switch from a temporary to a permanent shape in response to an external stimulus.
