Frequency-Resolved Reciprocal-Space Mapping of Visible Spontaneous Emission from 3D Photonic Crystals
One of the original dreams of three-dimensional (3D) dielectric photonic crystals has been to provide a 3D “designer electromagnetic vacuum”, which would allow tailoring of the spontaneous emission from emitters such as two-level systems, atoms, molecules, defects, or quantum dots located inside this artifi cial environment. This idea opens a wealth of opportunities. [ 1–3 ] For example, i) Eli Yablonovitch [ 4 ] envisioned total suppression of
spontaneous emission inside a complete 3D photonic bandgap. In the corresponding frequency region, the bulk photon density of states would be zero, i.e., no propagating Bloch mode would exist. A reduced spontaneous emission rate from photonic crystals has been observed experimentally.
