Power plant engineering
The electric power generation and distribution industry has evolved during almost exactly one century into its present form. This development has been driven by economics, technological advancements, and government regulations. These diverse forces have produced generation and distribution systems that are reliable, safe, and environmentally acceptable, suitable for service throughout the world. The technologies which make up the systems have brought a highly convenient and economic form of energy to both densely populated cities and remote geographic areas. Electrical energy has become a fundamental requirement for the existence of modern society. Likewise, it is essential for economic progress in lesser developed regions.
Because the need for electricity is pervasive in our society, there is a continuing interest in the technology of electric power production and distribution. Unfortunately for those with such interests, a comprehensive source of information has not been available until now. Existing texts have tended to be single topic treatments that address power plant design and plant components (primarily pre-1950) or electrical distribution system design. Power Plant Engineering, however, offers a unified treatment of power system economics, planning, design, and operation that includes consideration of all of the forces which have shaped the industry.
The problem in producing a reliable book that treats all aspects of the industry has been in recruiting authors of the talent level required and in providing time and support for successful completion of the project. Producing such a book requires developing the concept and organizing the effort required, as well as managing and encouraging individuals who can effectively communicate their precise technical knowledge and experience in many diverse fields. The Black & Veatch organization is fortunate to have available within
its structure the complete cast of players necessary to mount such a production. Equally important to its success, Black & Veatch management had the vision to encourage the project. The high level of talent and the effort expended on the task of producing the book are evident in the quality of the resulting product.
The book wisely concentrates on state-of-the-art technology. It emphasizes the why and the what of current practice. However, it does not neglect some of the underutilized energy sources and systems or the more promising of the developing technologies. The reader will gain a firm foundation in the technology and a good understanding of commonly encountered system configurations. Additionally, the ground work is adequately laid for the reader to be prepared for developments in the future.
I feel the book should be suitable and of strong appeal to university students (and faculty), to equipment manufacturers, to utility operators and owners, to system design engineers, and to representatives of the variety of local, state, and federal government agencies involved in planning and regulation. The book will find use as a university textbook, as a technical reference, and as a comprehensive handbook and guide to the numerous technologies that are necessary components of the electric power industry.
