Short communication Evaluating the genetic status of the IUCN vulnerable endemic Macedonian shad (Alosa macedonica, Vinciguerra, 1921) from Lake Volvi
The Alosa macedonica (Macedonian shad or ‘liparia’) is a landlocked fish species endemic to Lake Volvi (Macedonia, Northern Greece). The second largest Hellenic lake, Lake Volvi covers an area of 68.6 km2 that is included in NATURA 2000 sites and the Ramsar Convention. Although the majority of Alosa species are anadromous, amphidromous or marine pelagic fishes, A. macedonica is strictly a freshwater species. Worth noting is that the species was also previously present in the neighboring Lake Koroneia, which dried up in
1995, killing all fish (Crivelli, 2006). Although the Macedonian shad is no longer captured systematically (Bobori et al., 2001), it still remains an important fishing product mostly intended for salting. Furthermore, during early summer a local festival devoted to Macedonian shad is held annually in the village of Mikri Volvi, indicating that despite its low commercial value, it forms a source of social and touristic importance.
