Investigation of a subtidal fish community in a south-western Mediterranean settlement area of Morocco
Marine coastal habitats are important as nurseries for numerous fish species (Biagi et al., 1998; Felix-Hackradt et al., 2013). A large body of literature dealing with community composition, spatial and temporal variability, substrate use and mortality of fish recruits in inshore marine habitats
is available for the western Mediterranean Sea (Garcia- Rubies and Macpherson, 1995; Macpherson et al., 1997; Planes et al., 1999; Macpherson and Raventos, 2006; Oliva- Paterna et al., 2006); almost all of their studies were conducted in European waters, whereas little is known on the role of North African coastal ecosystems as nurseries. With a view to establishing a Marine Protected Area (IUCN-class VI MPA) on the western Mediterranean coasts of Morocco, a rapid assessment of marine megafauna biodiversity was performed in a previously defined area (Fig. 1).
