Sustainable fishery systems
I suspect that the writing of almost any book is a labour of love, and this is no exception. What
you have before you is in some ways a culmination of my interest, over several decades, in
the interdisciplinary and systematic analysis of fisheries, and in seeking out approaches to
improving the sustainability of fisheries. I have sought, in writing this, to produce something
accessible to everyone interested in looking at fisheries from an integrated perspective and
in exploring the various routes to more sustainable fisheries. I hope that this would include
undergraduate and graduate students from various disciplines, as well as professionals in the
fishery field, whether on the academic side, in science and management, or within the fishery
sector itself.
A wide range oftopics is covered in this book, from the structure and dynamics ofthe natural
and human components of fisheries, through the various pieces of the management system,
to an examination of a set of key themes that dominate fishery discussions: sustainability,
resilience, uncertainty, complexity, diversity, conflict and institutions. Key approaches that
are emerging as critical to sustainability and resilience are discussed in some detail, notably
the precautionary approach, the ecosystem approach, the co-management approach, rightsbased
approaches and robust management. Given the breadth of coverage in the book, those
familiar with certain aspects of fishery systems will undoubtedly be able to skip over parts
of the volume - and indeed may find some material presented at a simpler level than might
be preferred - since ultimately the aim here has been to present a fairly comprehensive and
accessible sense of what fisheries are all about, and where they are heading (or should be
heading).
To that end, the style of presentation is generally informal and meant for relatively ‘easy
reading’. Technical details, mathematics and the like are omitted, or placed in an appendix,
although abundant references are provided throughout for those wishing to explore topics in
hrther depth. Considerable use is made of ‘boxes’- as case studies or more in-depth illustrations
of particular points, or as optional side-trips relative to the primary direction of the text.
In most cases, the boxes are not referred to specifically in the text itself, but each box is titled,
enabling the reader to make the decision whether to take the side-trip or not, depending on
the topic at hand.
