Adverse Drug Effects: A Nursing Concern
Nurses have always had to have knowledge of drugs as they have been
involved with their administration both in the hospital and the
community setting, and they have also been involved in the education
of patients in regard to drug therapy. However, with the advent of
nurse prescribing, albeit from a limited list of drugs, and the increasing
use of drug protocols, the need for nurses to have a good understanding
of drug therapy, rather than just a basic knowledge, has
become vital. This book has been written to achieve this aim.
Unlike most books on the subject of pharmacology, this book looks
at drug therapy from the angle of adverse effects. The reason for this is
that adverse reactions are the main concern from the patient’s perspective
of drug usage, and one of the main reasons why they frequently
choose not to take the medications that they are prescribed. Due to the
close relationship which nurses have with their patients, they are well
placed to detect adverse drug effects early and take action to deal with
them before harm comes to the patient. Furthermore, if nurses are
aware of the broad spectrum of adverse reactions that drugs can
produce, they can help to monitor them and report back to the
Committee on Safety of Medicines, so that unsafe drugs can be withdrawn
from usage earlier rather than later.
The book is written chiefly for qualified nurses working in all
specialities, and nursing students coming to the end of their training.
However, it will also be of interest to others who have an inquisitive
mind and want to know why drugs have the adverse effects they do.
