Dynamic performance of wind turbine conversion system using PMSG-based wind simulator

Abstract
This paper presents an experimental investigation of a small-scale wind turbine conversion system (WTCS), using wind power simulator based on a permanent magnet type synchronous generator (PMSG) which is directly coupled to a servomotor to emulate the WTCS. The wind power simulator is either speed or torque controlled in which propose a “wind shaft”, to verify the dynamic and static operating features of the wind turbine. To evaluate the dynamic performance of a small stand-alone wind generating system, simulation is carried out using PSIM software. The simulation results are compared with those obtained by experimental testbed. This comparison shows that the operation performance of the small WTCS is substantially decided by the behaviour of the used PMSG. A selected wind profiles
in Egypt are studied using available direct coupled simulator. In the studied laboratory-based stand-alone WTCS, the inverter is designed and controlled to divert all the generated power, at the same time achieve the desired power quality for the load. Hence, a three-loops control strategy is used for this purpose. For improving the WTCS dynamic performance with diverse of electrical load and wind system
parameters, feedback control loops are used to get a good quality of output voltage that can be achieved under various loading conditions.
